The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Management Shift Follows Poor Feedback
Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's disappointing unveiling last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure updated employees about this decision through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the necessity for a clearer vision.
The president stated that the developers is now overhauling the project with a revised focus, aiming to address player expectations.
A Pattern of Key Acquisitions
This announcement echoes a comparable step taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the beloved franchise development group.
Below is the full content from the president's memo:
Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative creators we have had the chance to work with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to endure.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was enlightening. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had improvements to make. It revealed the need for a clearer vision.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You took the feedback to consideration and overhauled the title with a refreshed goal - one that’s ready to achieve its promise to our fans.
The belief in this project grows every day. To boost the remarkable development you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Studio Head of 31st Union. Following several months of discussions, he officially joins us on the specified date.
His management and expertise in the PVP shooter space is extensive, having spent the last 15 years developing and managing some of the most recognizable titles in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in receiving Ben in the coming days. We are all excited to persist observing the development of the game in the time to ahead.
David
Background of the Incoming Head
Brinkman currently serves in the position of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had stints at other industry leaders.
Title Information and Concept
The upcoming game was revealed in last year together with a public demo. At the time, 31st Union presented the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description states. "Face the opponents with fresh skills, stakes, and tests that evolve every round. Will you leave securely with your collected items? Alternatively take a risk, put it on the line, and trust your group can earn top ranking? The decision is in your hands."
Project Ethos does not have an announced release date or platforms, but enthusiasts can look forward to additional details as development advances.
