EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial news:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the new year, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
