Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
