RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels down to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," Healey said. "Including them were numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
