Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
