Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the ability to question certain rulings from the official, echoing the protocol already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
